Rnd 2: With purple, join with sc to center dc of any 3-dc group, (16 dc in next ch-7 loop, sc in center dc of next 3-dc group) 3 times, ch 4, (dtr, ch 1) 12 times in next ch-7 lp, (tr, ch 1) twice in same lp, (dc, ch 1, dc) in same lp, sc in center dc of next 3-dc group, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next ch-7 lp, (Ch 1, tr) twice in same lp, (ch 1, dtr) 12 times in same lp, ch 4, join with sl st to first sc, fasten off.

JOINING PANSIES TO DOILY:
**(See note below)
Rnd 1: With green, join with sl st in ch-2 sp between solid sections, ch 3, keeping last lp of each dc on hook 2 dc in same sp, thread over and through all 3 lps on hook (cluster), * ch 3, skip 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc "shell") in next ch-3 lp, ch 4, 3-dc cluster in next ch-2 lp, ch 4, shell in next ch-3 lp, ch 3, skip 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 3, 3-dc cluster in next ch-2 sp, rep from * around, end last rep with ch 3, join with sl st in top of first dc-cl. (16 shells, 16 clusters).

Rnd 2: *Ch 4, sc in same dc-cluster (picot), ch 3, sl st in 13th dc of first small petal of yellow pansy, ch 4, sc in center of next shell of doily center, sl st in center of next small petal of same pansy, sc in center of same shell on doily center, ch 4, sl st in 4th dc of next small petal of same pansy, ch 3, sc in top of next dc-cluster on doily center, rep from * around until all pansies are joined to doily center, end last rep with ch 3, join with sl st in dc-cl, fasten off.

**NOTE: When joining the pansies, it will make a neater "line" on the petal edges if you sl st into the BACK of the stitch in the pansy rather than the entire stitch, which tends to break up the line of the petal edge. If you look at the dc on the petal from the back, you will notice that you see the loop at the top of the stitch and a loop right beneath the top stitch. Try slip stitching into those two loops rather the two top loops. You will be looking at the petal from the front, so you will have to put your hook through what is the back loop of the stitch and then down through the bar right behind (or below) that loop.

EDGING
Attach white in ch-4 lp of first large petal of any pansy, sc in same lp, *(ch 3, sc in next ch 1 sp) 15 times, sc in next sc between petals, sc in next ch-1 sp of next large petal of same pansy, (ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp) 14 times, ch 3, sc in next ch-4 lp of same large petal, sc in first ch-4 lp of next pansy, rep from *across 2 large petals of all pansies, join with sl st in first sc, fasten off.

FINISHING:
Weave in all ends carefully. Spray lightly with starch if desired and pin to shape. Let dry. I lightly steam press the large petals of each pansy first to shape them nicely, since they overlap and are hard to pin to shape.

 BED OF ROSES AFGHAN

This afghan pattern originally appeared in a 1977 issue of Family Circle.  I have permission from the company that owns FC to publish this pattern on my web site for one year.  Please do not redistribute this pattern or make a copy on another site; this would be against the special permission I have from the publisher!  The original text is extremely small, and we re-typed the pattern to make it easier for you to use.  I have made dozens of these afghans over the decades making small changes like leaving off the bows at the corners of the blocks; the border is so pretty that I used it on literally hundreds of baby blankets!

This lovely afghan is crocheted in six-inch squares which are stitched together and bow-tied on the corners.  Our finished afghan measures 44” x 56”, but of course, the size can easily be adjusted by changing the number of squares.  The soft spun-sugar look is created by using a mohair-blend yarn for the pink, peach and fern green colors.  The white holding it all together is a slightly sturdier acrylic.  All joined squares are bordered in several rounds of solid and open work using pink, peach, and white: plus picot stitch edging.  The matching finished pillow measures a 14” square.
